Started in 1755, a leader then and a leader still, Vacheron Constantin is the oldest surviving czar of the watchmakers world. The company was founded by a young entrepreneur and skilled craftsman Jean-Marc Vacheron. The second generation heir Abraham Vacheron took over the family business in 1785.
But, it was passing of reins to the third generation heir Jaques-Barthelemy what made the company enter a new era of cross border trade starting with France and Italy. By this time the company had created its first complication and first engine turned dials.
Realizing the tremendous potential of international markets, Jaques joined hands with Francois Constantin to expand international trade in 1819. Francois Constantin became the partner of Vacheron. The company was rechristened as "Vacheron & Constantin". Under Constantin’s leadership company entered into international trade.
The turning point in the history of the company came when it hired Georges-Auguste leschot as the supervisor of manufacturing operations. A skilled craftsman that Georges was, he led the standardization of movements into calibers. Also, he invented a pantographic device which mechanized small watch parts etching in the dials. This revolutionized the watch making industry in general. All these inventions propelled Vacheron & Constantin much further than other watchmakers of their time.
After the death of founders, the company went through hands of series of owners.
The star studded history of the watchmaker boasts of many first in its arena of watch making. From making first non magnetic timepiece in 1885, to creation of one of the most complex pocket-watches ever made by Vacheron Constantin in 1935.
In 1955, to mark its 200th anniversary in the world of watch making the company launched "Patrimony", the world’s thinnest mechanical watch.
Even the credit of designing most expensive watch of its time goes to the czar, the Kallista studded with 118 diamonds, made directly from a one kg solid gold, was sold at USD 5 million, in 1979.
1906, marked inauguration of the very first Vacheron Constantin boutique, located at Quai de l’Ile in Geneva. As of now the company has 15 exclusive boutiques across the world to sell its timeless timepieces.
In 1970, Vacheron &Constantin became Vacheron Constantin and "&"was removed. In 1996, Vacheron Constantin was wrapped under the umbrella of the Richemont Group.
